- Abstract:
- USGS High Resolution Orthoimage. Ortho images consist of a tiff file format, one file for each 1500 x 1500 meter block on the ground. Pixel size represents 0.3 meters on the ground, images are 73 Mb per color tif image. No attributes available. These tif images are a subset of orthorectified aerial images (orthoimages). An orthoimage is remotely sensed image data in which displacement of features in the image caused by terrain relief and sensor orientation have been mathematically removed. Orthoimagery combines the image characteristics of a photograph with the geometric qualities of a map. For this dataset, the natural color orthoimages were produced at 0.3-meter pixel resolution (approximately 1-foot). The design accuracy is estimated not to exceed 3-meter diagonal RMSE (2.12m RMSE in X or Y). The projected coordinate system is UTM, with a NAD83 datum. There is no image overlap between adjacent tif image files. The naming convention is based on the U.S. National Grid (USNG), taking the coordinates of the SW corner of the orthoimage.
- Purpose:
- These data have been created as a result of the need for having geospatial data immediately available and easily accessible in order to enhance the capability of Federal, State, and local emergency responders, as well as plan for homeland security efforts.

- Logical_Consistency_Report:
- This orthoimage was subset from a mosaic of the tiles provided by the State of Massachusetts MassGIS. Seamlines were not 100% visually inspected, but those inspected had no missing data along the edges.
- Completeness_Report:
- All data delivered from MassGIS are incorporated into the new 1500 x 1500 meter images. Source imagery is cloud free. Photography was flown during leaf-off in deciduous vegetation regions. Coastal areas and international boundary regions may have areas without images (void areas) in parts of the coverage. These void areas have a radiometric value of zero (black).

- Process_Step:
- Process_Description:
- The processing of the photos was conducted by two firms. Intermap Technologies of Englewood, Colorado and Ottawa and Calgary, Canada processed the mainland portion of the Commonwealth east of the 165000-meter line (in MA State Plane coordinates) and Chas. H. Sells, Inc. of Charlton, MA processed the remaining area west of this line (approximately 72 degrees longitude). These vendors provided scanning, softcopy aerial triangulation, orthorectification, image mosaicking and quality control.
- Process_Date: 2001
- Process_Step:
- Process_Description:
- This image is a subset from a mosaicked image of Boston, Mass. The mosaic was created by mosaicking 8000 x 8000 pixel images together, which were provided by MassGIS. The original state plane projection was reprojected to UTM Zone 18.

- Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
- For natural color orthoimagery from file, a digital number from 0 to 255 is assigned to each pixel in each display band in a three-band image represented by red, green, and blue (RGB). Areas where the rectification process is incomplete because of incomplete data (that is, lack of elevation data, gaps) are represented with the numeric value of 0.
